Just thinking ...

Is it possible that where we are standing sometimes matters MUCH LESS than in which direction we are moving? Here's a quote from a technology tutorial concerning the use of a computer mouse:

Now, that seems pretty obvious. "Sometimes, no compromise means no compensation" (Upton). Reflecting upon my own self and the direction in which I am moving ... No one else ...

Sometimes we walk through dark valleys without much warning. Questioning is natural. Perhaps these valleys teach us some deeper things about ourselves, about others and about the nature of Jesus. Emergence from the darkness and into brighter surroundings restores hope.

Learning and living restoration are not always simple tasks, even though the process is necessary, beautiful and hope-filled. When I began praying for restoration years ago, I had no idea where the road would lead. I still have no idea! Am I handling these transitions perfectly? I would think not. But, I am so blessed to have my faithful Friend keeping His eye on "this sparrow" and covering me with "His hand."

Along those lines of personal reflection, let me mention that I love being back in St. Tammany Parish to teach. Teaching at Lee Road Junior High School is a joy. Next week, exams begin. Where have 9 weeks gone?! I am excited about starting a MATHCOUNTS Club (https://mathcounts.org/sslpage.aspx) this next nine weeks.

Busy? Yes!
Fulfilled? Yes!
Happy? Yes!

Just thinking prayerfully this morning about my baby sister (Danan) and her family...

Danan is a missionary to Africa. Her oldest child (Hannah) starts college this year. So, Lord willing, I will experience the absolute joy of a brief reunion with them this Saturday. Before returning to Africa, Danan will help Hannah to settle into college here in the USA. Please keep them in your prayers. Times of celebration can contain embedded growth pains.

Also, I just want to express in writing this morning how blessed I am. Jesus is so good! He knows my EVERY need and supplies when I do not even realize that I have a need. He gives grace and strength, direction and hope. He is the source of all peace. May you be abundantly blessed with His peace today.

Frost's poem has always been one of my favorites. In the last teaching year and especially during the last few weeks, the meaning of the underlined part of the poem has become less clear to me. It's really ironic when a person kind-of gets to a place in which life seems to have been somewhat "figured out," only to realize that one knows less than ever about some things. I guess that in one sense, a person never gets to return to the exact same spot with everything intact as it was at the beginning. (Was it ever really completely "intact?") Yet, the return to the spot is possible! What is there holds the potential to be even better than before because of the unique, rare opportunity and joy of the trip back to such a critical spot. I'm thankful that Jesus has my life in His hands. And, that's exactly where I want it to stay!

How blessed I am!

In a couple of weeks, my baby sister (Danan) and her daughter (Hannah) are scheduled to be in the United States, too!

So, I have a strange sense of humor! But, I find this quote hilariously honest. In excitement about and preparation for my move to Lee Road Junior High School this coming year, I have been reflecting upon my own teaching again. I had actually bought the above-mentioned book BEFORE I went to the Job Fair. My heart had said that I would remain in the junior high area, even though I had felt that I would return to St. Tammany Parish to teach. Even if I did not, the learning would be valuable. So far, this book has lived up to my expectations and more.

Concerning my return to St. Tammany, let me say that I am honored to have been offered this wonderful opportunity to teach at Lee Road. Even though I haven't spent much time at the school yet, I have definitely been there in heart already. Reading this book has been helping me to translate that zeal into concrete plans for differentiated, purposeful instruction. New Teacher Orientation in St. Tammany Parish also has helped me to connect to some of my new colleagues. Learning about Positive Behavior Support at my school and soaking in the Summer Institute for St. Tammany Parish are on the "menu" for next week. The so-called (again, humorously penned) "lazy days of summer" are drawing to a natural close. And, I'm excited!

Concerning my move to and from Bogalusa to teach, let me at this point keep it simple. I have discovered that a person can be "from" a place and have a heart toward the people and progress of that place, yet not fit "in" that place. My questions have been answered. Sometimes I think that I will at some point share my experiences here so that I might help others in similar situations. At other times, I wonder if some of those stories might discourage others who are still fighting that good fight toward reform in a troubled school system. For today, I will simply state that St. Tammany School System is my family, my home, my safe place to teach.

I am including this video below because of Annie Chapman's description of life for a family with a child in middle school. My experiences from November through May of this past school year in Bogalusa Middle School (BMS) have reminded me that what she says is true. After the privilege and joy of visiting with a couple of those BMS students at Walgreen's this past week, I thought about their futures. I pray blessings upon them. May what they are building upon educationally stand and may those who help them to build be blessed and prosper in that purpose!

The Story

During the week of Church in A Day (last week of April), another miracle occurred in our family. Eliana was born to my older daughter (Kara) and son-in-law (Mike). Without going too deeply into the history, just let me write that the pregnancy was a wonderful surprise. Even though it was high-risk, required a specialist in high-risk pregnancies and ended with "Ellie's" premature birth, everyone has done well by God's grace. Kara does not care to be in pictures. So, I am mostly sharing photos other than those in which she is present. (Hope I did a good job, Kara!)

Church in A Day (CIAD): Getting Ready! (Post #1)

What a joyful and busy few weeks these last ones have been! If I had not had an Easter holiday from school, I do not know how I would have made it. Mid-week in late April, my older daughter went into labor 5 weeks early. Precious Eliana, a sweet gift from Jesus, was born the next day! That's also the day you will see in the pictures shared here (below). Deliverance Tabernacle (http://www.deliverancemandeville.org/) was honored that weekend to be a small part of the Church in A Day (CIAD) that was being built in Abita Springs. This first post is simply what I call, "Getting Ready."

Iva Rosa has been a friend from the time I met her over 20 years ago at Talley's Chapel United Pentecostal Church, my home church. When Cammie (my younger daughter) was born, Sis. Iva became like a "second mother" to her. The photos in the above collage give a glimpse of our story, even though photos can never capture the full memories and emotions of the heart. As I was making a movie with music to celebrate "Moma Iva's" life, Cammie told me that she just could not watch it right now. So, I abandoned the movie idea, at least temporarily, and created a collage instead. Sis. Iva Rosa will be greatly missed.

Hope... Sun's Coming UP!

Emotion...
Emotional would describe the last few weeks. Several friends have lost loved ones, including the sudden passing of a young man in a motorcycle accident. A couple of other friends hold loosely this morning to that imaginary, invisible, fragile thread between life here and Eternity.

Hope...

We hope in life. We hope in death. We hope beyond this life. So, whether the miracle comes or not, we have hope. Whether the passing is unexpected and abrupt or after a tedious and tiring battle with illness, we have hope in spite of the fact that life seems short at best. In reality, none of us has any guarantees about tomorrow. But, what we do have is HOPE.

This morning, words of hope reverberate throughout my being. May these song and verses shared shine down on your day with the light and love of Jesus in the same manner that they are filling my heart this morning. All along my own journey and whenever the final word of my story has been written here on earth, know that Jesus has been my joy, my strength, my song, my friend, my guide, my HOPE and so much more!

Through the frigid rain falling this morning, I hear songbirds. In fact, the creatures busily spend the morning beyond my office window searching for food in the dying, frozen grass. What an inspiration they are, assuming their cooperation in a few weeks to NOT bother the fruit on my plum trees! They may eat the bugs, but must leave the plums for me. Time and energy to notice and appreciate Nature's songs has been sparse in my life lately. But, not even the icy precipitation that has led to my "holiday" from work this morning hinders the music and melodious toil of these songbirds. I thankfully listen this morning as I pray and study. How blessed I am!

Several years ago, I passingly noted that my daddy seemed to be collecting various robin-themed items. This morning as I have unintentionally studied the robin, my daddy has immediately come to mind. Although daddy is DEFINITELY NOT an Internet person, my mother will surely share this post with him. Daddy, I hope the links below interest you. I suspect that you will really like the elder gentleman singing a legend about the robin.

Finding the legend is pretty ironical in that I have been teaching myths and legends to my 6th-grade English/Reading classes. The fact that Groundhog Day (http://www.groundhog.org/) was this week made the unit timing relevant. Wait until I tell my students that at least one legend has been written about the robin! For the record, I do not use groundhogs or robins to determine weather or anything else. But, our heavenly Father teaches that we CAN learn some things from Nature...

Doodlings on Desire

As much as I love pictures, one would think that the camera would never be more than a few inches from my fingertips! However, I must confess that I located my (again) long lost camera Saturday. Oh, the photo opportunities I have missed! On my way to morning church service yesterday, I decided to check out the battery condition. In the process, I inadvertently took a picture of my open Bible. Well, the rest is history... I began flipping through the pages of the Bible in my lap and snapping photos of a few favorite passages. Today, I would like to "doodle" a bit about the above two of those verses...

I love going to God's house. If you have ever read my "Dee's Deeper Days" blog, you may have noticed about 10 posts written on the topic of "Dwelling in God's House" (http://deedickson.blogspot.com/search?q=Dwelling+in+God%27s+House). Even from my earliest days of childhood, I remember the excitement of going to church. Countless treasured moments of experiencing the "beauty of the Lord" while inquiring in His "temple" come to mind. I believe that this very act of inquiring leads to more revelation of who the Lord is.

Yesterday afternoon, I had an unusual experience in the church PARKING LOT prior to the evening service. Normally, I would only share such a unique experience that many may not understand at all with my closest friends, the ones who know me well enough to NOT deem me absolutely crazy! My husband and I had been to lunch with a friend and then to the hospital to visit with a church member who has been quite ill. I was refreshed in my spirit, but exhausted in my body. When we returned to Deliverance Taberacle about an hour early, I chose to stay in the vehicle and take a nap. In the distance, I could hear people talking, the Spanish church leaving. The next thing I remember...

I dreamed that I was asleep in the vehicle. All of the sudden, my spirit was outside my husband's truck and my body was inside, asleep, resting. Outside the truck, my spirit could do almost anything! My spirit was jumping and leaping and worshiping Jesus in exuberant ways. Inside, my body was at rest. Eventually, my spirit moved toward my body again. A figure from a distance moved toward me with an outstretched hand. I could only see the outline of the figure, but felt such a peace, compelling me to take the hand. In the dream, I felt that I could grasp this loving hand and move forever away from that body. But, I also knew that my family would return to an empty body. So, I moved into the body and either awoke or dreamed that I awoke. I stayed there for a while longer, just meditating on the goodness of the Lord. Then, I truly awoke and went to God's house to worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24). What a tremendous "taste" of the GOODNESS of the Lord (Ps. 34:8).

Last night, I noticed the comments on Facebook of a friend who goes to church in Slidell. She expressed heartfelt pain and longing induced by NOT being physically able to attend church in recent weeks and JOY about her ultimate return yesterday. Sometimes, I think that I may fail to thank the Lord enough for the blessing of being simply ABLE to go to His house! Jesus has been good to me! This morning, I am stopping to say thanks in writing...

Just a few thoughts this morning about my latest transition ...

So far, I am enjoying teaching 6th-grade. Various family members have noticed that I am much more relaxed than I had been recently. Certainly, I now have more time for life outside of school. This bend in the road is not one that I had anticipated. Teaching Algebra I in the New Tech environment had been my cup of tea. While I do not now feel at liberty to publicly discuss the events that led to my move, I probably should make it clear that I did ask to transfer as soon as something for which I am qualified became available. And, I am MOST thankful for the door of opportunity that has opened for me.

The Lord Is My Shepherd

Just wanted to share some brief thoughts. The Lord is my Shepherd. Maybe that security sometimes causes me to speak, to "go where angels fear to tread" (an old saying). Picking and choosing one's battles in life can be tricky. Mistakes may happen. Indeed, there is a time for silence. But, there is also a time to speak. Fake diamonds only exist because there are true diamonds of great value. Some things are of GREAT value. The gain of those spiritual treasures sometimes costs ALL.

Phil 3:7-15

By request, I am working this weekend on a brief Bible study about music and worship. (In fact, I am a little overdue with it!) A chorus about worships states, "I'm coming back to the heart of worship. And, it's all about You." If we lose sight of what Jesus seeks in worship, we risk transforming our gift to Him into simply another form of entertainment for others. Also, my prayers remain with our Country and with all who have sacrificed their lives or the lives of friends and/or family to the hands of terrorists through the years. You have become soldiers in a battle for which you probably never enlisted.

My Transition to New Tech, #2

My absence from the blogging scene recently may lightly foreshadow my doodling topic today, my early days of teaching in a New Tech environment (http://www.newtechnetwork.org/). The amount of planning necessary has thus far exceeded any teaching planning I can recall. In all fairness, this is my first experience team teaching full-time with a science teacher. Additionally, the last time I taught regular Algebra I was nearly a decade ago. The extra planning time required by New Tech immersion may have resulted from a combination of these and other unnamed factors.

Years ago, Dr. Hilly Benard talked to me about project-based learning (http://pbl-online.org/). I thought, "How in the world can consecutive projects be sustained enough for full content integration within the time frame available in a course? How can any single project guide the learning?" In all truthfulness, I thought, "He's way out there on this one!"

Now that I am here, I want to say that I am watching it unfold in this first unit,. While it may not fit all students (too early for me to comment), I truly believe that we finally have an environment for MANY students who have literally suffered through traditional schooling in the past. The responsibility for the general planning remains upon Sherri and me at present. We teach 9th-graders who have little experience in this exact environment. But, the responsibility for the learning is shifting from us and onto the students. We are becoming true facilitators, coaches of learning you might say.

We are studying variables (independent and dependent), trends in data, the Scientific Method, graphing, measurement and more than I can remember right now through this ONE project. Students have worked together in teams to write contracts through which they may actually fire each other from the job. Teams have designed their own projects based upon specified criteria. They are in the process of collecting data. All are using measurement tools. Some are having to be creative about how they are going to measure. For instance, one group is studying a particular "jump" (for lack of a better word on my part) movement. How does one measure the jump? Right now, they are using a video. They plan to do a still frame for the height of the jump. We'll see how that works for them. The room is full of excitement and energy for most of the students now that the projects have actually begun.

What about my transition? My planning is not only for this class, but for 2 elective classes I am teaching. Those elective classes do not meet every day. That has helped. I am also in the process of learning the technology used to share information (the entry document for the project, contract ideas, workshop materials, activities for scaffolding, etc). Learning how to evaluate has taken time. Student Learning Outcomes are evaluated through rubrics. For instance, students know exactly what is expected in order to achieve a score of unsatisfactory, proficient or advanced in 21st Century Learning Outcome categories such as Work Ethic, Collaboration, Technology Integration, Oral Communication, etc., when they begin a project.

I believe that I have been on a journey to this point for a long time. A number of years ago, I helped to write curriculum for Algebra I in St. Tammany Parish. The Parish was moving toward Performance Assessments (projects) at the END of units of study. At that time, I was writing with a team, but was NOT teaching Algebra I. Who knew that I would one day be in a teaching setting in which those projects would be expanded? Who knew that instead of learning culminating with some real-world project, the learning would be guided THROUGH the project? Who knew that all of that technology I was beginning to integrate into the curriculum would become everyday tools in the classroom? I think we all know WHO knew. I'm the one who is still adjusting to it all. Jesus always has EVERYTHING under control.

So, where am I now? Excited and tired. Find the word tired in the dictionary and just put a picture of me beside it. Everyone tells me that it's going to get easier after my first year. In that past, that has been true. That makes it easier for me to believe it now. While you're looking through the dictionary, also put my picture beside the words refreshed and invigorated. What I am feeling is that "good tired" one feels after vigorous exercise. I'm really enjoying what I am doing. As always, keep me in your prayers. I want to make a positive difference.

July... What a month!

After having completed summer school teaching in June, I dove into helping Kara with wedding details, celebrating the wedding and beginning my New Tech teacher training in Chicago. Then, at the beginning of August, Sandy, Terry and the kids blessed our family with a visit from Indiana. Blogging, though I love and enjoy it, rarely has made it to the top of my "Can Do Now" list. This morning, I have decided to begin what may be a few posts about my transition to New Tech teaching. Although insanely boring to some, maybe these words will bless someone and will allow me to reflect on personal growth.

A little justification...

Many friends have asked, "Exactly what is New Tech?" Some have wondered how it is different than the structure of other schools. On a personal level, I feel that I may not have revealed the full picture to many friends who have celebrated with me the time I have gained by not being "on the road." This first year at New Tech will likely find me busier than I have been in years. I do not want my anticipated occasional disappearance from the social scene to be misinterpreted! Knowing me, I'll find a way to get into that scene anyway, some way!

Today, I do not have time to really begin talking about New Tech. Who would have guessed?! But, I do want to warn you where my thoughts are headed for future posts here. Also, I want to share some of the few pictures I have taken in the last 4 weeks.

As for the present...

The brighter aspects of the next few days should be interesting, busy and exciting. I'm scheduled to attend training related to my new job over the next 2 days. Further, I hope to attend the meeting related to the trip I am scheduled to take with colleagues next week. My husband continues to complete our partial decking. Kara and Mike's wedding is set for this Saturday evening. May every person who has graciously and overwhelming helped in preparation for the wedding experience my heartfelt gratitude. Hope you are enjoying your summer. In Louisiana, it's pretty warm right now. Actually, I should say that it's QUITE hot! My dear husband is braving the blistering sun to build at least a section or two of the deck we have hoped to construct for about 3 years. I'm so thankful to him and to the Lord for making a way for this dream to finally materialize. Perhaps I shall post a few pictures soon. Of course, the treated wood on the deck cannot be painted for months. Any pictures would in that sense be incomplete.

In the meantime, I am also making plans to attend the training/conference for my new teaching position at Bogalusa New Tech High School. The time to organize as I move in that direction is NOW! Even in my excitement over the new possibilities, specific efforts in that direction have been few. Although teaching in June was a pleasant surprise, it somewhat may have slowed me down regarding these preparations. Believe it or not, school starts again in just a few weeks!

Just relaxing a bit...

Kara's Shower

Kara's (older daughter) bridal shower that other family members/bridesmaids gave in my home this weekend was nice. With summer camps, teaching in summer school and the bridal shower complete, I am organizing at home for my move into my new classroom for next school year and getting ready for Kara and Mike's wedding. In all of my "busyness," I desire to "keep the main thing the main thing!" To me, NOTHING is better than starting the day with prayerful meditation on the Word of God!

The passage that I am reading this morning (yes, taken out of context) encourages me. It reminds me of the mercy of God. In this particular passage, Israel is facing the "fury" of God because of their "ways and their doings" (verse 17). Yet, the Lord remains faithful to them for His name's sake. As a beautiful chorus says, "Oh, how I love the name, Jesus!"

Whatever promises you may have from Him, know that Jesus is faithful. May your week be bright and lovely. May these excerpts from Ezekiel 36 encourage you today...

Amazing... After all of the people's failures and the fury of God, He simply wants them to ask him to change things for them. Sometimes, we remain in situations, even those of our own doing, simply because we do not ask (inquire) of God. Those who have had His name (Jesus) called over them in water baptism surely understand that He still has pity because of His name's sake. Whatever I say or do, may it be done and bless in the name of Jesus...

Expectations for people who appear to be strong can be unrealistic. It is so easy to misjudge. My one encounter with this kind gentleman occurred nearly 10 years ago when my husband and I went before the Louisiana District UPC Board concerning a personal matter. During an intense question-and-answer session, Elder Mangun simply extended a few moments of well-timed compassionate words toward me. He did not know me. He had no visible reason to offer his support. Yet, his few remarks changed the atmosphere in the room for me. Just him being who he was? I suspect so. And, I shall always remember and cherish that memory with heartfelt gratitude. He affected my life in a positive way and likely never even knew.

When I read the attached news article (above), I was touched by the visual image of those who have given their lives for freedom coming home in caskets draped with flags. Then, I remembered how many times as a child watching the Olympics, that "lump" came into my throat as our flag was raised and the Star-Spangled Banner was played for winners. As my mind continued to dream, graduations, Vacation Bible School procedures and many other flag-waving memories surfaced. Truly, Americans are a blessed people in spite of our shortcomings and failures.

When Jesus weaves His pattern for our lives, the result is breathtaking. As in any work of art, the beauty sometimes emerges only when the picture is complete. Each little piece is simply too limited and jagged to reveal the whole. Tonight, I am spending some time in thankfulness for the work of heart that He continues to create of my life, even in times of saying farewell and letting go...

Where Our Friendship Started

My friend Libby is the niece of my dear friend, Sister Iva Jewel Miley. Sister Iva Jewel's husband (Bro. "Elmo") was the twin sibling to Libby's mother (Sis.Dale). When we graduated from high school, I doubt that Libby or I had a clue that our paths would intricately cross again. Although I had observed Libby's deep beliefs and faith in action, I do not recall ever having had the opportunity to delve into its roots. As a matter of fact, I had no clue that I had some Apostolic roots in my own family!

Nearly 10 years later, at a desperate point in my life, I attended a family reunion in a nearby city. Don Miley (Sis. Iva Jewel Miley's son) happened to be singing at a church that day in the area. One of my cousins went to the singing before coming to the reunion and invited Don to come and eat lunch. During the afternoon, he and I began to talk. Later, I reluctantly agreed to attend a singing with him and visit his church,Talley's Chapel United Pentecostal Church (TCUPC). The picture below (me) was taken in the summer of 1989, approximately one year before I visited Don's church.

Talley's Chapel was a small, community church. The pastor and his wife, Reverend and Mrs. Terry Tucker, immediately took me under their spiritual wings. They spent countless hours answering my questions and praying for and with me. Meanwhile, Don's parents and I grew closer. The Miley's son David, a songwriter and talented musician, had been killed in a tragic bus wreck. Bro. Elmo and Sis. Iva Jewell rejoiced in sharing stories of their sons (David, Darryl, Dalton and Don), their daughters-in-law, their grandchildren, their faith and the music of the New South Boys (a group David had formed)! When Libby and her family returned to Louisiana for visits, we reconnected, sharing OUR faith! I cannot even begin to express the gratitude I feel to all of these friends.

Where the Road Has Led

Nearly 10 years later, Jesus brought my wonderful husband (Reverend Steven Dickson) into my life. During this time, I moved to Mandeville where he continues to pastor today. As Robert Frost wrote, "Way leads on to way." Through it all, including the deaths of Bro. Elmo and Sis. Dale, I have remained close to the Miley family. We have not able to be together as often as I would have preferred; yet, we have always been very close in heart. No distance can ever completely sever the relationship between those who are joined in such a manner.

Where the Road Will Lead

Many people question whether or not Jesus will return in "this generation," My husband has often admonished the church, "This generation is the only generation YOU have." Tonight, I am working toward my final earthly farewell to Sis. Iva Jewel. When I returned to my car after church service Sunday night, I received the message that she had "passed on."

My friend Sis. Iva Jewel Miley spent the days of her generation in kindness. I remember when her health allowed her to meet me at Maria's for lunch at the proverbial drop of a hat! I recall the vacation that she and Brother Elmo took with me to Tennessee--the first time they ever left the State of Louisiana, I was told. She cried when she saw the mountains, listening to "Higher Than I've Ever Been" (recorded by Don, I believe). One relative at the hospital this past week remarked, "I would not be a nurse today, if it were not for her." She loved deeply.

I will see her again. Clouds of grief may at times cover the sky. But, as The McGruders sang before the passing of his wife on to glory recently, "See those clouds. They're the ones He's coming back in!"

Cammie's 18th Birthday

Once again, Nana outdid herself with a birthday party! This birthday was the landmark 18th one for Cammie. We missed our family members who were quite some distances away. Nana did not allow the smaller crowd to hinder the feast she prepared. Mmmmmmm!!!! Cammie begins her 18th year by spending nearly the whole month of June in Tioga at various Louisiana District UPC events...EXCITING!

In the meantime, Kara (older daughter) is gradually moving into her apartment in Mandeville. She and Mike plan to be married in July. Chris (younger son) has fairly well settled into his new dwelling. My husband continues to take good care of the church over which the Lord has placed Him as pastor, Deliverance Tabernacle. (By the way, we are all HAPPILY moving toward payoff of the note for the facility which is now under $9,000!). And, I am teaching summer school in Bogalusa for the month of June. How's that for "slowing down?!"

Some seasons seem easier than others.

Transitions rarely are simple.

The Lord is working all things together for the good of those who love Him and are the called according to His purpose.

One week ago yesterday, I spent my final days on the faculty of Slidell High School (SHS). When Mr. Joseph Buccaran hired me 9 years ago, I quickly feel in love with SHS and dreamed that I might complete my teaching years there. Life does not always happen according to my plan! Many friends have made these last weeks easier for me. My husband has been a jewel in dealing with the chaos of moving years of teaching collectibles temporarily into our home. This week, I said an earthly farewell to several elderly friends: Mrs. Jo Anne Polk's mother, Mrs. Maude; Mrs. Bobbie Miller's mother, Mrs. Annie; and my sister Deidra's deceased husband's mother, Mrs. Vera Lou. No matter the circumstances, change can be difficult and awkward.

This weekend will be a full one...

Cammie celebrates her 18th birthday. Deliverance Tabernacle joins in 5th Sunday festivities. Our youth complete their final fundraiser for camps, a garage sale. And, I prepare to teach summer school (GEE Remediation) at Bogalusa High School.

As I move forward, once again I am experiencing the goodness of Jesus in His continued working of all things together for my good. Sometimes when one does not see what lies ahead, the surprise is breathtaking. I just want to take a moment to share such a story with my friends...

Immediately following Hurricane Katrina (2005), prices ridiculously skyrocketed in Mandeville. A home similar to the one we lost to the storm would have cost approximately double the previous value of our home. Nearly 2 years later (after serious land clearing and planning), the Dickson family moved onto my home property from my youth, a piece of land on the outskirts of Bogalusa. Since that time, the drive to and from Slidell began wearing on my family and my vehicle. Yet, Cammie and I did not want to leave Slidell High.

Fuel costs soared, weakening my resolve to stay at SHS. I found myself constantly stating that I would reconsider EVERYTHING when Cammie graduated. No option would be ruled out without prayerful consideration. These 9 years somehow moved me near the top of the Math Department in seniority, a state that I valued and believed to mean something (other than in situations involving poor teaching, of course!).

About 2-3 weeks ago...

I discovered that I would be teaching geometry (sophomores) all day next year. The administration felt that position was best for the School. Normally, this assignment would not be considered unusual or particularly "bad," other than that the sophomore class remains the focus of nearly every standardized test known to man. It gets old. In writing, I had asked to have Senior Applications (English) as a first priority. Later, I had verbally asked to have at least 1/2 day of higher-level math, an escape, a breather from such testing. I had also asked that my one pre-calc honors class be regular instead, if possible. The teachers who had taught several of those higher-level maths in recent years, friends, had announced their retirements.

Upon hearing my teaching assignment, I mentioned these requests and the retirements. The reply was that the decision was necessary and final. I stated that I felt my position in the department warranted reconsideration. I was told that seniority meant nothing at Slidell High. The person with whom I was speaking was and is considered a treasured friend. She was simply giving me information that had already been settled. It became clear to me that I would likely always be linked to the lower maths and testing if I chose to remain at SHS. This path was set. The question as to where the other roads might lead suddenly became all-important. I sensed that it was now or never for the changes I needed.

For a team player, the very thought of entering a time to lose, to cast away, can be draining...

What is not best for me ultimately will NOT be best for the students.

Though I am not there now, I fully understand the concept of burnout.

I never want to allow myself to go there...

The evening following revelation of my teaching assignment, I emotionally withdrew into personal prayer and mediation. I spent the evening raking my little garden and asking the Lord, "Is this path that has been chosen FOR me the one on which I am to spend the rest of my teaching years? Is this of you, Lord?"

That evening, I unloaded my burden on my husband. He and I agreed that I should begin to look toward the other paths. The next morning, I shared my story with my principal and sought my principal's support in trying to move closer to home. Before I left his office that morning, Mr. Percy had offered to give me a good recommendation and to help me with this move. He was very kind and supportive, as always. As far as he or I knew at the time, I was going to the St. Tammany Job Fair to look for a position in mathematics, English or special education.

When I returned to my room and checked my email that morning, I found an email from the principal of the New Tech High School (BNTH) in Bogalusa. During the Easter holiday, I had visited there. I had simply wanted to get a glimpse of my old high school and to see this New Tech High School housed there in operation. The experience had been positive. But, I had left unsure about making any changes. So, I had simply waited and prayed, thinking that such a move was unlikely or far down my road of life. My husband had heavily questioned any interest I had in Bogalusa, as he remembered my early teaching years there and the reasons I had left.

After reading the email, I called my husband and asked him to pray. Then, I called the principal. We talked at length. She was kind and listened intently as I shared my view of life and how I had only recently decided that I would check and see "where the other roads" might lead. She asked me to let her know whether or not I was interested in the next few days. Immediately, I called my husband with the intent of telling him that I felt I should try teaching in Bogalusa again. Before I could even tell him, he told me that he had read the email prayerfully and felt that I should "go for it!" He said that he did not understand why he suddenly felt the nudge he did in this direction. I do not understand it. I just know that for some reason, this is a season to return home to teach.

The New Tech High (http://sites.google.com/site/bogalusanewtechhigh/) enters its second year. If I understood correctly, applicants selected for the first year were only freshmen and sophomores. Even though upperclassmen will be added this year, I will likely teach Algebra I on a modified block schedule. In this way, I can have one preparation as I focus on implementing project-based learning. Change is never easy for me. But, I'm excited about the potential this year holds for less travel time to and from school and positive experiences for students in my hometown, for my new colleagues, for my family and for me along this path upon which I have never before ventured.

Things happen for a reason. I am thankful for my 9 years at Slidell High School, my 14 years of teaching in the Slidell-Pearl River area and all of the friends I have made in my 20+ years of teaching. How blessed I have been!

Chris (son) moved out this week and into his own efficiency apartment. Kara (daughter who has been staying with us) and Mike (soon-to-be son-in-law who has been staying with my parents in Sun) located an apartment in Mandeville, as they have continued preparing for their wedding (July). Cammie has worked diligently toward her June goal of working in Tioga (SALT team member for Children's Camp, concession stand worker for Junior Camp and participant in Senior Camp). My husband finally has been able to somewhat organize his shop (our shed) because others have been able to move their belongings.

Undoubtedly, Dee's Doodlings have been ramblings once again today. I probably have just needed to recollect on recent personal and family events for my own benefit. If you happen to have stayed with me in reading this lengthy post, I pray that you have been blessed in some way. Also, may all of those who serve in our military be especially blessed this Memorial Day Weekend as we honor those who have given their lives in service.

Last week, the Dicksons attended two graduations, Cammie's (Slidell High) and Sarah's (Fontainbleau High). We are thankful for the gift that these two young ladies are in our lives. Sarah and Cammie plan to enter college soon with the goal and dream of becoming teachers down the road of life. Please keep them in your prayers.

This week, I am again shifting gears. When time permits, I plan to post a note or two about my own present journey. For now, please continue to pray as the Lord is opening new doors of opportunity for me. Meanwhile, underclassmen are taking exams. When those exams have been given and graded, the final bell will ring and the door will close on another school year. Through it all, Jesus has been faithful.

Yesterday was a lovely day. My husband and I had a quiet, unplanned lunch at Applebee's after morning service. Both services were deep. I'm so glad that we still have Sunday night services. Last night's was particularly meaningful for me on a personal level.

Who knew that I would need that strength today? After hearing this afternoon what I am scheduled to teach next year, I have been really wrestling with my thoughts. Maybe I am strange in that regard. Right now, I feel as though what I see before me has far greater implications than any ONE school year. In fact, I feel as though the course for the next several years is being charted.

So, I must move prayerfully and wisely, discreetly and calmly. Atypical of my usual style, I find myself tonight very emotionally detached from the decision. I'm not sure what that means at this point. I feel somewhat hurt, only because I feel that promises are not being kept. To me, a person's word is his or her promise, whether or not the word promise has been spoken.

Please do not misunderstand, my friend, as you read this post. I am not being offered something that would under normal circumstances be considered a "bad schedule." In fact, I have been given the privilege to move into a very nice room next year, a room containing some newer technology. Further, when the plan was revealed today, some very nice compliments were spoken about my teaching. However, I'm just thinking back and realizing that years of "giving" have not led to the place that I had believed they would for various reasons. As a song I recently posted reminds me, though, "Through it all, God's been good." Slidell High School has overall been a tremendously positive teaching experience for me.

Tonight, I find myself just pondering...

Please say a prayer for me that I will have wisdom and direction in these next few weeks and months. I travel quite a long way to and from work daily. I find myself now thinking more about practicality than anything else. Maybe it IS time for me to try and move closer to home to teach. As I prepare to make the first payment on my new vehicle, for example, it has about 4,000 miles on it already. Cammie's upcoming graduation frees me to broaden my vision about where to teach. Yet, maybe it IS NOT time for a move yet. I honestly do not know. If you have ever been in this predicament, you surely know how to pray for me.

Deidra (my sister) and I began our time together today by enjoying lunch at Maria's. Then, we visited two different long-term care facilities to share Mother's Day happiness with some loved ones there. We ended the evening at Nana and Pop's separately. Nana modeled a very nice apron set from the Bensons (Africa). Deidra had delivered her a unique no-burn candle with a delicious scent. Before we went to Nana's, my husband planted the lemon tree my family gave me for Mother's Day and brought me an incredible rose collection gathered from our neighbors' bush. When we returned from Nana's, Cammie surprised me with some hair accessories and a beautiful card.

I'm thankful for the undeserved blessing of another Mother's Day with my mother and my children in my life. My mother is also "mother" to my husband, who lost his own mother at age 11. Hope that all of my friends have a joyous celebration with family this weekend. For those who do not have their mothers or children present for some reason, I pray for you the blessing of a shared day with some woman or child who has been meaningful in your life. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

On many levels, I grasped again the power of prayer this week. When my body temporarily submitted to the jolt of several 4:45am mornings followed by VERY active and lengthy days, prayer prevailed. Indeed, the week's difficulties paled in comparison to its joys. The SHS Academic Awards Program likely deepened my awareness that the "baby" is graduating shortly. Countless prayers have been lifted through the years along this journey. My mind can only venture to predict the emotions of the coming week!

Chad Duffaut (also an SHS senior), Captain Jimmie Jones and I were blessed to join in the City's 59th celebration of the National Day of Prayer. Our SHS Navy JROTC Color Guard did a wonderful job, as always. Reverend Donald Bryan, President, and the Ministerial Alliance organized this event beautifully. Even though my participation was definitely out of my comfort zone, I am thankful to have been given the opportunity. The input of friends was a blessing. Sometimes, one is called upon to stretch beyond one's perceived limits by God's grace for personal growth.

Spanish-English Ladies' Meeting, April, Deliverance Tabernacle

Several of Our Ladies met with Sister--Hermana--Sarah Zepeda's ladies and those from several other local Spanish-speaking churches. A great time was had by all. I learned to teach through an interpreter. By the time the lesson was really going, I had almost become unaware of when I was stopping for the interpretation. Farewell to Seniors at SHS, 2010

The last week has produced a flurry of activity in hugging, reminiscing, celebrating and finalizing high school days for Slidell High School seniors. Among the group is my own daughter. One of "my" other seniors is a student I have known for the last 4 years. He came to me as a freshman in Tiger Family (just a cub, you might say). I also taught him math his sophomore year and English this past year. Despite many hardships in his life, he is graduating and doing well! Sending my Tigers off this week has been emotional.

Family

I have really been pulling for my sister and her family to raise money for their children to attend our Missionary Kids' Retreat in the United States later this year. A very dear friend (whose name I am probably not at liberty to mention) has really helped in this area. I'm so thankful for every dollar that has been donated. My sister's family has been in Africa for about a year-and-a-half this time. The Dickson family continues with yard improvement. The purchase of a tiller last weekend and some "elbow grease" have produced a small garden. I hope you enjoy some of the pictures I snapped this week of our ever-improving garden areas.

Speaking of garden areas, I must plant the purchases I made at Jim's Feed and Seed in Pearl River, Louisiana, on the way home from work yesterday. You'll like this story, I think. When I passed the store on my way to work, I noticed that it was "open." In fact, a truck of customers had already shopped and was apparently leaving, as I was forced to wait for them to exit the driveway before I could enter. I was in my husband's BIG truck. Once in the store, I asked about peanuts for seed and other plants. The cashier asked me if I could leave the store. Yes, she was running late on putting her money in the cash register. Holding a handful of money, she asked me to step outside for a few minutes. Stunned, I just told her that I would return on my way home from work. A young male employee who had witnessed the whole incident may have been surprised to see me again. Seated outside upon my return, he said, "Ya made it back, hu?" While it could have been a simple greeting, his tone and the look that had been on his face when she had asked me to step outside earlier suggested otherwise. Life is never dull with me!

A few moments ago, my husband brought me a vase of freshly picked roses from our yard. Now that he has inspired me, blogging is once again on the wait list. May this picture of our morning roses bless you as much as they have inspired me today.

Finally, I found this video today while looking for another one. I can say, "Though it all, God has been good!" May this young man's voice speak the praise flowing from my heart to Jesus into your soul today.
